"cnn newsroom" continues right now with ashleigh banfield. >>> nice to see you, everyone. it is 11:00 on the east coast. 8:00 on the west coast. and it has come down to this. after thousands of speeches and hundreds of ads, after hundreds of millions of dollars bankrolling months and months of nonstop campaigning, the two main candidates for president in 2012 are tied. see for yourself. the final preelection cnn polling could literally not be closer. president obama supported by 47% of likely voters. mitt romney supported by -- excuse me 49% of likely voters. mitt romney supported by 49% of likely voters. other late polls look very, very similar. one shows them tied at 48%. if you look way down at the bottom there. the others give the president somewhere between a one and three-point edge, depending on which one you look at there. but margin of error sefrg. the race to reach the voters on election eve is just so competitive. mitt romney is racing from florida in the morning to new hampshire tonight with stops in virginia and ohio in between.

in the hardest hit areas? that is a question we'll ask our guests in the next hour on cnn. so right now on the phone with me is a man who has dealt with natural disaster in his city, the mayor of philadelphia and knows all about the politics, and of the northeast, specifically. mayor michael nutter, and joe, the national guard is providing trucks as polling places in new jersey because the buildings were wiped out. officials in other states are getting creative to make sure everyone gets a chance to vote. so we still don't know. so i'm going to get to you and talk to you first about this. what are the states doing before i get to the mayor? what are the states doing to try to make sure that people are getting to the polls? and number one, should we really be considering the possibility of postponing voting in the hardest hit areas? >> well, don's it -- don it is easy if there is a state law that says you can change the election date in the state of an emergency, the law that says you can add a voting day if fewer than 25% of voters cast ballots, due to an emergency. otherwise, there are

in new york. and close to 5 million customers are still waiting for the power to come back on. >> cnn has the entire disaster zone covered this morning. our correspondents spanned out across lower manhattan and all up and down the jersey shore. >> first, the economic capital of our country is slowly getting back to normal this morning even while facing extreme damage. power outages and people having to walk for hours just to get to work. meantime, another hospital lost generator power in lower manhattan. right now hundreds of people are being pushed out of bellevue after hundreds of others were evacuated yesterday. our dr. sanjay gupta is live at bellevue but first to rob marciano. the governor says there will be no fares for subways, trains and buses but many of the bus and subway lines are still not up and running yet so how limited is transportation now? >> well, i can tell you from what we witnessed yesterday, it's very limited. for one thing the buses don't run at night, at least south of 23rd because it's too dark and dangerous. you come down here in the middle of the night and you

. and their desperation is now turning to anger. cnn's brian todd is on the island. he's joining us live. brian, tell us what's going on. >> reporter: wolf, we're in the new dorf beach section cedar grove avenue. this place is still flooded out even after the waters receded. people just barely able to kind of wade through the water, try to get to homes and assess damage. you've got a church that's flooded out here to your left, my right. and our photo journalist can pan back over this way down marine way. look down here with just the debris and people trying to gather things and bring things out and clear their homes of all the wreckage. what we know now, wolf, is that the bodies of two young boys who were washed away from their mother during the storm have been found. they were found in a marsh not too far away from here. now, that brings the death toll we think to a little bit more than the dozen people that we knew of before. exact numbers i don't have. but it's more than a dozen now just on staten island were killed by this. hundreds of homes have been damaged or completely destroyed. now we're goin

't get on to the island of manhattan. cnn's rob marciano has a staked-out spot to bring us up to speed on what's happening. how does it look from your perspective? we have seen the gridlock. is it getting any better, rob? >> reporter: i can tell you this, the number of cars coming over the brooklyn bridge today, it's flowing smoothly. definitely less than yesterday. so that problem-solving of shoving more people in cars are forcing that issue, may very well be working. as you mentioned, the subway south of 34th still shut down, including the green line and orange line here at city hall. and brooklyn bridge. speaking of the brooklyn bridge, how do you get over here? if you can't get on one of those buses -- they're free, fine, or you can't get in a car with other people or your car doesn't have gas, you do it by foot. a lot of foot traffic coming over to and from brooklyn on the bridge. and here's what people had to say about their commute this morning. >> today everybody is trying to get in, and get back to the normal things. >> reporter: do you normally walk over the bridge to go to w
